View Full Version : Backup files when upgrading/patching

Hi everybody,

(maybe this will appear as a silly question, sorry)

I just want to ask if there is a way of overriding the "file replacement" when installing a patch. In particular I would like to keep a copy (eg adding an externsion .old to the file name) of all the files that are going to be replaced.

Is it possible during a patch? and is it possible to keep .old files after uninistall?

Something similar also for registry keys (eg: having for each deletable/replaceable key a similar one keeping the last value).

Alas, there's nothing built into MSI for this; though you could add records to the MoveFile table in your patch to back up all the files in a directory.

The registry's harder to handle; perhaps you could create a custom action that ran regedit.exe /e key_to_export filename.reg that saves your old branch...
