View Full Version : Accessing server information during client web based installation.

Running in to a little problem....

Server side: Installs the client files (One Click Install) on the server and exports them via a web share. During this installation, the admin is asked what his favorite color is. His answer is written to a text file, located in the same web share as the 'One Click Install' files.

Client side: The client PC uses a web browser to connect to the web share. They click Install to install the client side package to their local PC.

Problem: How is it possible to have the client PC read the text file which was created in the server installation and parse it in to the PC's local registry? The file name can be hard coded, but how do you instruct the PC installation of the server it is being installed from ?

Does using the SourceDir property help?

No SRCDIR doesn't help. SRCDIR is the temporary directory where the setup files were extracted, not the web location where the One Click Install files reside.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the client install to read files from the web directory ?

I figured out a workaround.

During the server side installation, I edit (InsertLine) the default.htm file (which is for the client installation), and add in properties using ether.SetProperty.

Then, when the client machine points their web browser to the one-click installation page, it reads from the default.htm file and sets the properties on the client MSI package.
