View Full Version : Error 1706, caused by program other than ours

A user just reported to us that when they use WebEx software (browser add-in for web conferencing), it causes one of our packages to try to repair its installation, which fails with:
"ERROR 1706 No valid source could be found for <product name>. The windows installer cannot continue."
A dialog is offered to locate the <product name>.msi file, in this location:
which of course was the temporary folder used to store the msi file during installation, but which no longer exists. Clicking Cancel causes the dialog to reappear; 3 times doing this eventually gets past the dialog and the WebEx software then continues.

I went ahead and turned on Copy Media to Target Machine. This resolved the problem, although the installation dialog still appears ("Please wait while Windows configures <product name>", etc.).

Has anyone ever seen this bizarre conflict with a totally unrelated product causing another product to invoke this behavior? If there were GUIDs that were the same, I could perhaps believe it, but the likelihood of that happening is vanishingly small.

Resolution to this problem was achieved by simply not including ATL.DLL in our setup. See:
