View Full Version : Anyone else noticed?!! Release 2 broke NT 4.0 Support!!

NewsArchive

I'm using InstallShield Express 2.01. My setups execute fine on a Win95
machine. On NT4.0 they crash just after the 100% point of preparing the
Wizard. A Dr. Watson 'Access Violation' message appears citing the file:
_INS0432._MP.EXE.

I recompiled a setup wizard with my old Release 1.1 and it works! It
installs on 95 and NT machines, but doesn't support my ODBC 3.0 setup,
so this is not a solution.

What's going on here, InstallShield? And why don't you answer your tech
support phones?

Hear, hear!!!!!!

You're not alone. I'm now getting a few more reports of this exact same
thing. It wouldn't suprise me that MS released a patch that broke DLL
version checking. Can't get into the MSKB but the "Updating DLLs In
Use" has an article dated June 20, 1997, hmmmmm.........

Anyway, I've already made one posting about this and have to say I'm
more than a little disappointed in InstallShield's support. If I ask a
question to a problem with an answer I'll get a response within 24
hours. Twice now I've asked about GPFs and get NOTHING!

InstallShield please responsd. Even if it is to say you're researching
the issue. It's not WISE:) to say nothing.

We need more information on this problem as we've been trying to

Does the crash happen on ALL NT 4.0 machines or is it just on machines
with some specific service pack installed ? Does it happen with all

Please
send us the value of "AppInit_DLLs" under

if it exists on machines where the crash is occuring.

I have sent two email messages to Installshield about this same problem and
all I get back is a receipt saying that the message was deleted without
being read.
But to answer your question, Yes, I installed 'CleanSweep' on the system
but it is not running in the background. But you are right, the problems
started with the installation of 'CleanSweep'
The May1.exe update gets to 99% and crashes. Therefore no installs can be
created to even test.
I run NT 4.0 Workstation (Build 1381-SP3)
I hesitate to send a list of my registry settings for AppInit_DLLs because
my email goes unread by Installshield anyway.

From your posting and 2 other Dr.Watson logs which Shawn had sent me it
is evident that these crashes are occuring as a result of QuarterDeck's
CleanSweep
installed on these machines. We have found out that CleanSweep's hook dll,
APITRAP.DLL
causes a crash when a Resource Only DLL is loaded and Express uses some
Resource Only DLLs. The simplest way around this problem is to rename
the file APITRAP.DLL in the Windows System directory to APITRAP1.DLL.
After running the Express created install you can rename the file back to
APITRAP.DLL
Please be aware that CleanSweep will not be in action when you do this but
this is not so much of an issue if you had turned on the "Automatic
Uninstaller"
feature when you created the install with Express.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this workaround in the form of
postings to this newsgroup or Emails.

Rajesh was right on!
I got rid of CleanSweep and APITRAP.DLL and the upgrade installed smoothly.

Not only that!
RegClean works again! A bonus!
P.S. I was not running Cleansweep in the background. Even if you choose not
to run their applets, the DLLs are loaded.

Same results here as well!!!!! Thanks Rajesh.

Might I suggest putting this in either the FAQ or KB. If it's already
there, sorry, I couldn't find it.

Thanks again!

We need more information on this problem as we've been trying to
reproduce this problem for quite a while.

Does the crash happen on ALL NT 4.0 machines or is it just on machines
with some specific service pack installed ? Does it happen with all
installs
you create ? Can you reproduce this with an install which includes just one
file ? If yes, it would be helpful if you could eMail me your setup.

Does these machines have Quarter Deck CleanSweep installed ? There is
a known issue of installs crashing with CleanSweep 3.0. Are there any other
Install monitors or monitors of any kind installed on these machines ?
Please
send us the value of "AppInit_DLLs" under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
if it exists on machines where the crash is occuring.
