I have a license for Installshield 11, do I have to pay to get another license for 11.5?

You might not depending on the maintenence contract. We are licenced at work and have a silver contract which offers unlimited support calls, and by jove, I've made a lot of use of those. I also get all minor releases as well as one major release in the 12 months contract period.

Check the conditions of what you have to see if you qualify similarly. I'm not sure if 11.5 is a major jump so maybe you'll get it as it should be able to sniff that you have 11 already?

I'm not sure if we have a maintenance package ... I'm just waiting to find out.

We have a normal license without any maintenance contract bought in June or July. Any chancce of us getting a free or discounted update to 11.5?

I hope so, I don't think we have a maintenance package either ... but I'm sure that if it offers free upgrades we'll probably get it, as this is cheaper than buying a new license for the new version.

We have a bronze maintenance package .... I'm not sure what this includes.

Nice, I just found out that we will get a free upgrade to 11.5, because we do have the maintenance package.

Bronze means you'll get the update when it is released. Find out about your maintenance plan, or how to get one, here. (http://support.installshield.com/support_options/default.asp)

I know traditionally we offer a discounted upgrade price for non-maintenance upgrades, whereas maintenance upgrades are included in the original maintenance plan price. I do not know specific pricing plans for 11.5.

...but is 11.5 considered a major upgrade or a minor upgrade?

Depends on the product code when it was built. ;) :D

My understanding is that it is a paid release, and it will function independently from (and coexist with) InstallShield 11.0. I believe this corresponds to "Major Upgrade" in the terminology Jonny_B is using.

"Major" or "Minor" doesn't really matter. With a maintenance plan you receive all updates that are released within the 12 month period of your contract free of charge. (There's no limit like "all minor plus one major upgrade"). So if you buy a Bronze plan for IS 11 today (before 11.5 is released) you will get 11.5 at no additional cost, and maybe even 12.0 (if it's released within the next 12 months).

If you don't have a maintenance plan you can upgrade from 11.0 to 11.5 at a discounted price, ususally about half the price of the full version.

The price for a Bronze maintenance plan is about the same as for a single upgrade, so if you plan to upgrade to 11.5 I would strongly recommend buying a maintenance plan NOW. A Bronze plan also includes online support (via web form). Phone hotline is only included in Silver and Gold plans.

Important note: Once version 11.5 is released you can no longer buy maintenance for version 11.0. So if you want to take advantage of this you must act *NOW* (IS 11.5 is expected to be released within the next days)

Thanks a lot for clearing that up Stefan.
