View Full Version : Setup.exe file size

Just upgraded from Installshield 7a to 11 Premium.

One of my projects usually creates a single image (setup.exe) of 6 MB. Now it creates a setup.exe of 13 MB which is almost double!

I'm using the same dialogs, the same redistributables, I don't think I'm including anything new. Also I created the project from scratch just in case.

I even tried to lower the engine version to see if it helps. Doesn't help.

I'm using the following merge modules:

<row><td>COMCAT.3207D1B0_80E5_11D2_B95D_006097C4DE24</td><td>0</td><td>Microsoft Component Category Manager Library</td><td/><td/></row>
<row><td>COMDLG32.576D64B0_7413_11D2_B954_006097C4DE24</td><td>0</td><td>CMDialog ActiveX Control DLL</td><td/><td/></row>
<row><td>MDAC27ENU.C9C35FC7_5AEE_4C1E_8BD2_80ED9FA87FFF</td><td>1033</td><td>MDAC 2.7 Sp1 (English)</td><td/><td/></row>
<row><td>MSVCRT.51D569E0_8A28_11D2_B962_006097C4DE24</td><td>0</td><td>Microsoft (R) C Runtime Library</td><td/><td/></row>
<row><td>OLEAUT32.8C0C59A0_7DC8_11D2_B95D_006097C4DE24</td><td>0</td><td>Microsoft OLE 2.40 for Windows NT(TM) and Windows 95(TM) Operating Systems</td><td/><td/></row>
<row><td>OLEDB21.D994E757_5B96_11D5_8A0D_0060083A72A6</td><td>0</td><td>OLE DB 2.1</td><td/><td/></row>

My old project did too. But it doesn't seem like the merge modules have grown in size. It seems like the setup engine has grown in size...

It's not because you have both the MSI 2 and MSI 3.1 inside the setup sub file is it.

Check Releases, there are few options:
Setup Launcher: Yes (include Windows NT & Windows 9x MSI Engines)
MSI Engine Location: Extract Engine from setup.exe
MSI Engine Version: Version 3.1 or 2.0 (best fit for system).

If you need the package to be small you could change the MSI Engine location to Download engine from the web.

Windows XP machines with auto updates turned on should already have the lastest engine anyway.

Ok thanks.

Actually I might have been a bit too hasty before placing my comment.

I'm realising now that Installshield seems to be marking more redistributables during static en dynamic dependency scans.

If that is the case, then there's no real problem at all in my opinion. If newer packages have more dependencies then so be it...

I converted a second project and that one did NOT grow.

And it turns out that the second project has far less dependencies.

Anyways I'm investigating the problem.
