View Full Version : Installer that dynamically downloads install components

Hi all,

We currently have a CD that gets distributed to our customers containing about 15 other products. There is 1 installation file on it that is run. From this, users select the other products they wish to install and then install them (the one installer file calls the other product's individual installers).

We're testing some different installer products because we'd like to move to an installer that:

1) Is a relatively small, single file that can be downloaded off our website and run at any point in time.

2) When the installer is run, it analyses the user's computer and searches for all of the (above) 15 products to see if they are installed or not.

3) Downloads only the installers for the missing products and then runs these.

It looks like InstallShield can do this, but I can't figure out at all how to make this happen. Do I use a .msi, or an InstallScript, or what? I'd just like to be able to create a small test program that does something similar so we can determine whether InstallShield can do this or not, before deciding whether to buy and use the product.

Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

For this type of wrpaaer I would use the InstallScript project type.
