I'd like to be able to show a splash screen, and still use the large initialization dialog. Is this possible?

I'm not aware of a built-in way. You might be able to modify the initialization dialog box with a resource editor, but I haven't tried it.

You can add as many dialogs (disclaimer: don't know of any MS limit) to the UI sequence.

So, use the splash screen. Look into the UI Sequence and add away.

So if I create my own custom splash dialog, I can display this splash dialog during SetupInitialization instead of the stock SetupInit dialog?

Yes, examine the Sequences (UI) and examine how the dialogs are presented. Then see where and conditions to display your own.

Go to dialogs and make a dialog. Then go to the UI Sequence, insert it and run the install to see the behavior.

Is there a way to display the dialog for a certain amount of time, then have it automatically go away? I don't see anything in the controls to do this...

Maybe add a custom action with a timer?

thanks for your suggestion. This is an interesting alternative.

That's a good idea. Add a CA with a timer.
Have the dialog with one action on it, this timer function.
It will release the dialog and go one its way.
