Let me start by saying I know nothing about how to use InstallShield Automation.

I'm trying to set a couple of properties (i.e. product version) at build time and from what I can gather, automation is the way to do it. After several frustrating searches I've been unable to find anything along the lines of InstallShield Automation for "DUMMIES". Dummies being the key word. Where do I start? How do I set up automation? How do I execute the automation?

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

I am looking at how to do this also. I found this article:

http://www.installshield.com/news/newsletter/0309-articles/GUID_dvs.asp

It is specifically for InstallShield 9, I believe, but should be similar for newer versions.

Also, see this thread:

I haven't used the automation yet, since most of my build scripts are in perl, and its just much easier to save the project file as XML and edit it that way, instead of using the automation.

But if you want to use automation, look in the help docs, under "Automation Interface", there are quite a few examples in there.

Please not that if you use any of the examples referenced in this thread, be sure to use the correct progID for the latest version of IS. The couple examples were using the version 9. Just something to look out for if you are new to using the automation interface...

Right, there are several short articles about it here; search for "automation": http://www.installshield.com/news/newsletter/details.asp. The older articles are the simplest; as Martin says, you'll want to fix up the ProgID to match the version of InstallShield you're using...
