. We created a win32 msi using this 8.0 Developer on a win32 platform. It would install on both win32 and win64 platforms. On win64 platforms it would install to C:\Program Files (x86)\ directory and would install properly. Thus the same msi installed fine on both platforms.

Now we are trying to move to Installshield 11.0 as with this we would get support for operating on both 32 and 64 bit registry hives. So we took our same proejct which was working using Installshield Developer 8.0 and coverted it to Installshield 11.0. We made no other changes to it. We again built it on win32 platform.

The thus created win32 msi would install properly on win32 platform.
however when we tried to install it on the same 64 bit platform, after the initiall screen which said " Preparing to Install" , it directly goes to the final scrren which says that "The Wizard was interrupted before <product> could be completely installed "

The log file is below.

Thanks in advance,
Schubert.

This type of problem seems to be cropping up all over the internet now. I don't think it is related to x64 but a problem with InstallShield engine and Installscript on any flavour of XP. Some people have gotten around by deleting the Installshield folder in common files or renaming it as it is installing.

Just wondering does your PC have any Macromedia packages already installed on it or about to be installed via SMS?

just an observation-
On certain machines, which are on a domain, silent installations like Antivirus, etc. are always running. On such machines, we have faced such issues after upgrading from X to 10.5. Help!!!

We are seeing a similiar issue with an installer we upgraded from 10.5 to 11.5.

Specifically on a x64 machine we can not install a package created as a MSI (no setup.exe) Now if I install an installer that does use a setup.exe it works fine. And after that installation Our MSI works.

Did you ever figure out what was going wrong?

I am also in the process of trying to get a setup to work on 64bit system and have encountered similar issues as others.

I found that if I create a new setup with all my features and code in place then the setup works - so far. I have not completed the process.

I have also noted that remote debugging is buggy when running on Vista.

I suspect that there is some type of problem when converting a setup from a previous version of IS to IS 11. In my case I had converted from IS 6.3 to DevStudio 9 (two years ago) and then to IS 11 this year. I have not tested the DevStudio 9 setup on vista so I don't know if the previous version actually worked on vista.

The problems I have seen:
1. Merge modules for things such as mfc71, msvcr71, msvcp71, etc do not install after having converted my setup from a previous version. They do install if I create a new install and add the merge modules. Note that removing and adding the merge modules or their respective holders again does not fix the issue either.
2. having problems processing registry files in the OnMoved event. I have .reg files that I manually process in the OnMoved event. This works on any 32bit OS but in 64Bit OS it will fail. In fact I never see the OnMoved event during debugging on the 64Bit OS when trying to debug.

That did not work for me. I did create a new install and it did work properly. But as soon as I added any Installscript custom actions the installation would fail to run.

For me I would get the error before the Welcome dialog would show up. If I click OK the installation will still continue. As far as I can tell it doesn't hurt the installation. There is a Microsoft KB article that will fix the issue or at least it did for us.

tried a working IS 11 Basic MSI (that uses IS script custom actions) on 64 bit and immeidiately jumps out with the same 1: ISMsiServerStartup Failure, Failed to Initialize script support, Error = 0x80010105 error. This MSI works perfectly on 32 bit.
Also tried a Setup.exe bundled exe but same result.

Tried an IS11.5 install same result.

Tried manually installing the scripting engine.

Tried the MS patch for MSIEXEC.

Tried deleting the CommonFiles entries - all to no avail .

Anyone else got any suggestions ?

How are you insalling the installshield runtime? My issue ended up being that the installscript runtime does not install properly when installed as a merge module on x64 machines.

in the basic msi the IS11 engine is a merge module - but I've tried downloading the IS11 script.msi and installing it manually but nothing seems to cure the issue.

As i say all the installs I've tried work perfectly on a 32 bit box.

Have you installed any antivirus?

Just double checked - no the machine has no Virus software installed.

I am going to do a mini install that does nothing except install one file and see if that behaves the same way. Will also try and find another IS11 based install from a third party and see how that behaves.

Thx

tried the IS11pro.exe install and this works ok - however I suspect that this install is not a Basic MSI install - investigations continuing.

Ok - the install now works - this is what I did.

Created a Basic MSI install project with one Feature one Component no Files.
Build the install - ran fine.
Added the IS Script engine MSM.
Build the install - ran fine.
Add an Installscript plus Custom Action (this brings the offending ISMSIServerStartup action into the install).
Build the install - now the bare MSI won't run - try running the Setup.exe - this runs ok.

Now the bare MSI will run and all my installs will now run.

So as with other people seems that something in the setup.exe is resolving the issue but I'm none the wiser as to what the real issue was.

OK this is exactly the issue I faced. It is a bug in installshield that they dont seem to plan to fix. they did put together a workaround for it however detailed in this PR

http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q111093

I think they wanted to ignore this becuase 12.0 does not use a runtime instead everything is self contained in the msi.

thanks Michael - that's exactly the issue - obviously doesn't come to the top of the pile when Googling unless you know exactly what to type as I didn't manage to hit it using my log messages. As 64-bit is becoming more the norm perhaps it needs a bit more prominence by IS as it's pretty fundamental in a 64bit 2003 enviroment and that the most liley 64bit you're going to currenly come across.

You would have thought a patch was in order for IS11/11.5 or are we all just expected to keep shelling out for another product every 6/9 months ?

Thanks to all who responded on this one
