specifically, i'd like to use appsearch to search for an executable file. if it returns true (the file exists), id like to change the INSTALLDIR to the location of the executable, if it returns false (the file doesnt exist), id like to allow the user to try to browse for the directory manually. i dont want to set it as an install condition because if i do that, then the install will fail if the file is not found. if anyone has any suggestions at all, please feel free to contribute.

-thanks in advance

How about in your installscript you can check if the property from appsearch is set then you can set INSTALLDIR equal to it, if not you can allow the user to pick.

is there any way to do it without using Installscript?

Perhaps condition control events based on the AppSearch property: show a directory-browse dialog box if the property is unset, otherwise skip it. Similar to how the SetupType dialog box moves to either CustomSetup or ReadyToInstall based on the user's selection...
