View Full Version : Creating shortcuts on the fly.

I am new to the Innstallshield software so please bare with me.

I need to create shortcuts on a client pc via the install that would use a link, to an .exe that resides on a server, to be determined earlier in the install process.

Should I create the shortcuts in the IDE and modify the link during the install or create the shortcut via scripting?

Is there any way to determine the Machine Id of a remote server where the setup resides?

Any examples of this will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I guess the easiest solution is to store the path to your server in a property. You will probably already have some custom action to retrieve it, so this should be no big deal.

You can then specify the Target of your shortcut as
[YourServerProperty]\Your.exe or something similar.

For your second question: it depends ;)
Depending on your "build options" you could investigate the SOURCEDIR property and see if it provides the information you need, e. g.:

' Get the value of SOURCEDIR
Dim sInstalldir
sInstalldir = Session.Property("SOURCEDIR")

' Show it.
MsgBox sInstalldir
