View Full Version : Update server selection...

Is there any way to tell the Agent object to use a particular update server? Or is the agent smart enough to pick a particular server, via some sort of load balancing/redirection mechanism? The plan is that if we purchase the update service we'd like to use the InstallShield hosts, rather than deploying our own update servers. Do/can we have to point our client software to particular servers based on our policies? Or is it better to let the intelligence for that happen behind the scenes in the InstallShield objects?

The Update Service Agent looks to the InstallShield Notification Server(s) by default. In this scenario, we take care of the load balancing. We have a server farm and distribute traffic across the servers.

If you host the Notificaiton server on your servers, then you can redirect the Agent to your servers. Most companies who do host the Notification server on-site implement a single URL that gets load balanced (via hardware or software) to several back-end servers.

One thing to keep in mind is that the traffic between the Agent and the Notification server is minimal. The higer level of traffic comes when the Agent goes to pull and update from your download server.
