View Full Version : ODBC Datasource Install Error

I have an application that uses Interbase and Crystal Reports.

For Crystal Reports to run, it needs a Datasource defined in
the ODBC.INI. Have been having a hard time trying to determine why all of
my
parameters and values for an ODBC Datasource is not being
installed.

When going through the Checklist.. I'm able to see the parameters and
values for the
selected Datasource. Can even see them in the .iwz file. The problem
occurs
after the installation. The only parameter that gets entered under the
section heading is
the driver. Question: Why is this ????????

I hope this is not a question that will linger out here forever... seems
that anything that
deals with ODBC is not being responded to.

Thanks for any help that InstallShield or anyone else may shed on this.

I appreciate your prompt reply.. also, I've read the article
that you suggested, but find it difficult to understand how
the registering of .dlls would have an effect on not writing
entries into the ODBC.INI file. If what the article suggests
is indeed the case, then the question still remains... why was
only the 'Driver' entry made?

As I stated in my original post... when the ODBC datasouce
is being selected in the "Objects" section of the checklist, I
can see the following:
Driver=C:\windows\system\blint04.dll
Description=DIRECT ODBC for Crystal Report
Database=\\SERVER\D:\DIRECT\PHONE.GDB
LogonID=DIRECT
LockTimeOut=

When the project is saved, I can open the .iwz file and see the
same information. When the installation is done, the reports will not
run due to not having all of the information in the ODBC.INI file.

After the installation, the ODBC.INI file has the following information
for the Datasource:
[ODBC Data Sources]
.
.
DIRECTRPT=Borland Interbase

[DIRECTRPT]
Driver=C:\windows\system\blint04.dll

I can manually open the ODBC Administrator, select the data source,
modify the entry with the missing information. Now... when I run my
program, the Reports WORK !!!!

My question still remains..... Why isn't all of the information added to
the ODBC.INI file during the installation?

I don't want to sound ungrateful for the help, but I really need to
understand
what is going on here. Is there something about ISPX that controls what
gets
entered or what ?

BTW: This is a 16-Bit installation.

Jim

Max:
Thanks for your suggestion about reading the Knowledge
Base. The article that you suggested was not the correct
answer, but was able to find one that solved my problem.

After further research, was able to determine that the
DLL file would only let the "driver" parameter be put
to the ODBC.INI file in the datasource section... the
user would have to add any additional parameter. This
was accomplished with the help of article X1056.

After following the instructions in the article (X1056)
from the Knowledge Base, was able to build a disk that installed
the product correctly.

Would like to say that I find InstallShield Express Pro very
easy to use.... just have to get over some of the "quirks" that
are present, but overall, much easier to use than InstallShield3.

Jim.
