When the UpdateService does its periodic check for updates, does it do it at the same time of day, across all installations of IS UpdateService? Thanks.

No. Keep in mind that the Update Service is a "dead" EXE on the desktop. It is not a system tray process. As such, the Update Service only acts when called. When your application opens, you call the Update Service to perform the check for updates. The update service will see if it has already checked in the last '30' days. If so, it will skip the check. If not, it will perform the check.

so does this mean that update.exe is accesible to person eventhough a admin install had taken place...

ie. the admin can double click the update exe to check for updates
manually at the system where the admin install had taken place

Just for clarification - the Update Service runtime that you invoke is called Agent.exe.

In answer to your question, you can put a short-cut on the desktop (or anywhere) that an admin could invoke to check for updates so long as the application is installed on the machine along with the short-cut. The only limitation is that the check for updates has to be run on the same machine as the application is installed on.
