I am using the update service, developed with ISD8.
Whenever my IS is run on a XP machine, there is placed a shortcut in the "Start" menu. And I have not programmed the system to do that!

When my IS is run on a Win2000 there is no problem.

Is this a feature or a failure?

When you use the project wizard to create a project that uses the Update Servcie, a short-cut is added to your project (of course, you can remove or change it). It is created under

start > program > product > check for updates

Is this the short-cut that you reference?

No, the shortcut I reference to is placed on

start > check for updates

Could it be a local configuration on the computer?

If you look in your Developer 8 project at the short-cut view, do you see the short-cut under:

start > check for update

And you say that this short-cut only appears on XP? Not Win2k?

No.

Yes.

We have only tested it on one XP computer.

I am sorry for the repetatitive questions. I just want to be clear on what you are seeing. Do I have this correct?

Location of the short-cut in your Developer 8 project:
start > program > product > check for updates

Location where that short-cut got installed on an XP machine:
start > check for updates

That's very fine with me :-)

The location of the short-cut in the Developer 8 project is:
start > program > product > check for updates

The loction where the short-cut gets installed on an XP machine:
start > program > product > check for updates

and

start > check for updates

Does the shortcut in Start > Check for updates appear immediately after you install your program on XP, or only after you invoked the update check for the first time?

Note that XP automatically places shortcuts for the most recently used programs directly in the Start menu. It should disappear if unused for some time (i.e. be replaced by other more frequently used shortcuts). That's a feature in the new XP shell

Please see the attached screen capture.
Does it resemble what you are seeing?

As Stefan mentioned, by default XP creates shortcuts for recently used applications.

Yes! Thats the picture.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I really have to upgrade my Win2000 to XP so I know all the new "facilities" of XP.

Best regards to all
