Communicating results from an EXE/DLL

I am creating a shortcut in X Express, that I want to contain a command line argument to the target file. Unfortunately, the command line argument is dynamic, and I want to prompt the user for it (during installation). I could write a program to prompt them and hook it in as a custom action, but then how could I communicate the user's answer back to Express so that it can create the right shortcut? Or is there an easier way that I'm missing?

Ideas or suggestions are welcome.

You can use values of Properties in the Shortcuts view by enclosing the Property, or Directory Identifier in brackets, for example:

[MyProperty1]

[DATABASEDIR]

[INSTALLDIR]
