Can someone please explain how the InstallShield X palm os device support works? I'm using the professional evaluation verison to test this functionality, but I can't figure out how to get my .prc files loaded directly to my handheld. I've used the Palm Object wizard to target specific .prc files in my project, but nothing happens with these files during installation other than being copied to the target desktop ( i.e. not the handheld itself )

My understanding is that these .prc files can be specified to be loaded to the handhelds memory or a storage card directly, but I can't figure out how to automate this.

Thanks.

Upon futher testing I found the .prc loaded to my handheld after the next hotsync. This is exactly what I was looking for so my question is answered. I was just hoping some messaging would be included telling the user this was the next required step, but I can just add that as a custom action.

jeffkh,

You stated:
"Upon futher testing I found the .prc loaded to my handheld after the next hotsync."

I do not get that result. Do you sync only one device?
I have 12 users, one for each of 12 different devices; multiple users (devices) may be an issue.

Since it doesn't ask what user to install to, I removed any old files from Palm\User\Install directories then performed my new InstallShield Palm file installation. I did not see any Palm files copied to any of the Palm\User\Install directories.

I currently use Catapult to install Palm OS files. It lists all the users found in the Palm folder. You select one or multiple users. The files then get copied to the appropriate Palm\User\Install directory/directories. The next HotSync transfers the files to the device and that Palm\User\Install directory becomes empty. I do not see this process occur with InstallShield for Palm OS installations.

Sorry - I missed one of the folders.

I do see Palm files copied to Palm\Richar\Install folder but only 13 of the 26 that should be there. Is there a limit to the number of files that can be installed?

Also, how does InstallShield pick the Palm\User\Install folder during Palm OS installation? Since I am logged into the Windows machine as "Richard", is that why it picked the Palm\Richar\Install folder?

The installation needs to have the user pick what Palm User name they want the application installed to. That is especially critical for admins that have to install to multiple devices. I hope I am missing a configuration setting somewhere.

No, I have not.

I have looked through the Knowledge Base and other areas to learn more. The best I can determine on my own is InstallShield expects you to use Palm API functions to list Palm users and locate the proper folders. That requires more low level coding than I want to do.

I will continue to use Beiks' Catapult Palm installation software for Palm installs. It is only $45, simple and effective. During installation, it lists all the current Palm users and is a simple selection from the list for installation. I have used it for over 3 1/2 years.

If I learn more, I'll try to post it here.
