Call me stupid, but, do I have to uninstall 7 to install 8? I don't see this anywhere! I guess I'll assume I should uninstall v7 first, then install v8.
Thanks!

Developer 8 will automatically uninstall Developer 7. The two versions cannot coexist on the same machine.

Hi Art,
as I understand your answer, Dev7 (full version) and Dev8 (full version) cannot be installed at the same time.
But what about having both Dev7 (full version) and Dev8 (eval version) installed on the the same machine? Is that possible?
I would like to have a look at the Dev8 eval version to see if it is worth upgrading, but of course my Dev7 is needed for my current develpment projects and must continue to work! What should I do?

No the two cannot exist on same machine, doesn't matter whether it's full or eval.

Maybe InstallShield should do something about that. If the old full version and the new evaluation version don't co-exists, the customer's choice is either to stay with the old version or buy the new full version blindly (without prior evaluation).
If the Dev8 evaluation version automatically uninstalls my Dev7 full version, could I then after testing Dev8 uninstall it and re-install my Dev7 (full version) without loosing all my projects? Or will the Dev8 (evaluation) automatically convert all my projects to a new format so that I can never again use them in Dev7 (full) after re-installing it?

Only projects that are opened in Developer 8 will be converted to the Dev 8 schema...and even in those cases the old 7.X proejct will be backed up with a .749(I think) extension.
For trivia buffs, the backup extension number is the old schema version number.

In IS's defense....
You could download and try the eval of v8, if you don't like it, uninstall v7. With MSI, I have a lot more confidence in uninstalls these days! So, although yeah, it would be nice to coexist, you do still have the option of evaluating and if not liking, going back to 7, but I don't think you need to go back to 7, 8 looks great!

One final note on this thread: we have been working on coexistence and we do plan to address this in a future version.

In general I install eval and beta versions only on my test machine (or vmware virtual machine). I assume that all setup developers either use dedicated test machines or a tool like vmware to test their installations on a clean machine, so this shouldn't be such a big problem. (just my 2 cents)
